Many scanner manufacturers supplied software packages do not include the feature of colour management. You can therefore either use the profiles in applications such as Photoshop through its colour management settings, or purchase scanner software that allows you to apply scanner profiles. Two well-respected software-scanning applications available for a variety of scanners are:
Silverfast Ai and VueScan (our choice). For more information visit our links page.
scanner profiles
remote profiling
In order for us to create an input profile for your scanner you must be in possession of an IT8.7/1 (transmissive) or IT8.7/2 (reflective) target. You should whenever possible use a target that matches the film type scanned. For example, if you use Fuji film when taking your pictures, then it is preferable to use a target that has been manufactured on Fuji film stock. If more than one film type is used, pick the one on the film type you scan most often. Profiling is not available for negative film.
A cheap supplier of IT8 targets for the major film brands can be found on our links page.
- when you have obtained your IT8 target it must be scanned with all colour management settings in your scanner software turned off. Refer to the instructions that came with your scanner on how to do this.
- no adjustments should be made to the scanned target, either in your scanning software or post scanning. Do not apply Unsharp Mask or try to improve the target scan in any way that might alter the colour values.
- scan a 4"x5" target at 300ppi, magnification 100% and/or Scan a 35mm target at 300ppi, magnification 250%
- save the scan using a name that reflects the scanner and film type used e.g. epson_provia_16bit.tiff.
No profile should be attached to this file. It may be that your scanner driver despite turning off colour management will attach a generic profile to the image. When this happens open the image in Photoshop or similar and discard the profile before sending it to us. If you need assistance contact us. - e-mail the resulting uncompressed .tiff file to us or send on CD (CD to be readable on a Mac).
- after we receive your payment we then use the Gretag Macbeth software to create your profile and e-mail it back to you with the same file name as you supplied with the .tiff file. Due to the large number of scanners available we only include instructions on how to apply scanner profiles using Photoshop.
- a VAT invoice is dispatched
on site profiling
Scanner profiling at your location follows a similar workflow as above, except that we will bring with us a selection of IT8 targets for the most popular film types. We will make all the necessary settings to ensure an accurate scan of the target, create the profile and save it in the right location on your system. Then we will advise you in the correct use of the profile.
prices We charge £19.95 + VAT for a high quality profile using our Gretag Macbeth software. When ordering 2 or more profiles at the same time subsiquent profiles are charged at £18.25 each + VAT. Remote profiles are sent via e-mail, if you require them on CD a small additional charge of £2.50 + VAT is made to cover materials and handling. As our profiling prices are so low, if on site profiling is requested we have to charge for travel. The current rate is 34p + VAT per mile and mileage is calculated from and back to Tegryn, Pembrokeshire, SA35 0BE. For our calculations we use the AA's route planner although there are others.
